Good people!

radio radioMy dear colleague Scott, fond of sticking microphones in peoples faces for radio purposes (I speak from experience), has submitted a delightful interview with Ruth, his grams, as part of The Public Radio Talent Quest.

He IS talented, and delightful (as is Ruth, & as are all grandmothers) and if you are so inclined you should check out the forwarded message, log in, listen to Scott & Ruth banter, and rate accordingly . . .

From Scott:

Sirs! A contest to make radio, oh my. Perhaps you might some time go to http://www.publicradioquest.com/user/register to register as a voter, then log in, then go to my little piece at http://www.publicradioquest.com/node/572 to vote away?!? Thank you! Good Morning!

Luv,
cb

my new bloggy April 13, 2007

Well HELLO little chickens! Long time, no blog! Whew, I’ve been working pretty much non-stop, 24/7 since, oh, I don’t know . . . November?? Thank my lucky stars for insomnia!

So here’s a little progress report from the World of Wombat (that’s me.):

WRITING
Ahhh, it feels good to put that first. Gives me the illusion that I’ve actually found a way to put it first in my life. But I haven’t really. Not yet. Working on it. Applying for fellowships & such. I have what I’m now calling a hybrid genre manuscript of . . . what? Prose poems? Micro memoirs? Stories? Who knows. If anyone wants to publish it under any of these labels, fine with me.

But most likely, ain’t nobody going to touch it with a ten foot pen until I fork over The Novel. Oh, the novel. I have 37 pages and notes, and the best of intentions to work on it extensively over the summer and fall. Let’s see how that goes.

Which brings me to project #3, my backup plan if I get stuck in the novel, which I probably will. I intend also to start writing a memoir/history of my grandmother, her life story, and the history of My People, The Donauschwabens. These folks were Germans who were given the imperative: go forth and populate the world with more Germans. So they went forth to the shores of the Donau River in what was the former Yugoslavia, not so far from Belgrad. Then, when my grams was still a young thing, a new mom with a two year old daughter (my mom) and a soldier husband who died in combat in his early twenties, that not-so-nice fella by the name of Tito came & kicked My People out. So grams relocated to Germany, where she spent the rest of her 85 years, and she never made it back to the home she loved so very much. My favorite thing in the world was to listen to her stories about her home, her life, and of course her grandchildren. I started visiting her regularly beginning in 1989, and my most recent trip was this past February, for her funeral. Anyway, she always claimed that it was somehow my biological duty as her granddaughter to tell her stories and our shared history. Okay, grams, I’ll give it a try.

GIRLS WRITE NOW
Ahh, my other full-time (though unpaid, at least monetarily) job. We just had our first board kick-off meeting, which was AWESOME! My fellow ladies & I worked our little fannies off to pull this together, and we rocked it. Our board is slowly coming together, and lady oh lady do we have some passionate, dedicated, fabulous women joining us! Yahoo! The cavalry has arrived. I am currently the Co-Development Director, and as of the next fiscal year (July) will lose my “Co-” and become just plain Development Director. P.S. did you know you can support Girls Write Now by shopping?? Oh yes. See our homepage for links, and also our “favorite books” link (if you use the link to buy the book, amazon.com gives us a cut.) Also our Spring Reading is coming up on June 1oth, Astor Place Barnes & Noble. Hope to see some of you there to watch our girls rock out with their writerly voices. It is pretty damned amazing. My mentee, Phyllicia, has a spectacular piece prepared. I can only tell you that the topic is “bodily functions” and it’s really a fantastic little piece. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it is definitely better than Cats.

SUNDAY SALON
You know, everyone around me seems to be having babies. Even my lesbian friends are using words like “prime insemination zone.” Well. I’m not having any babies, but my reading series is! Sunday Salon Chicago just turned one, Sunday Salon Nairobi will hold it’s second reading this month, and I’m working on a possible Sunday Salon Houston with another NS MFA alumski. So there. Those are MY babies. Oh, and since I heart wordpress so, I’ve started a Sunday Salon blog called “In the Sink” http://sundaysalon.wordpress.com

Well, little chickens, I think that’s enough for now. Besides, it’s 6:15 am, and time for more coffee, shower, and then heading in to the office for the next non-stop work day . . .

Signing off,

Wombat
